The Earrings of Madame de...
Directed by Max Ophuls
Starring Danielle Darrieux, Charles Boyer, Vittorio De Sica

100 minutes -- certificate U -- in French with English subtitles

The bored wife of a wealthy general needs to cover her debts, so sells a pair of diamond earrings, and as they pass hands between aristocrats, their mistresses, pawnbrokers and back again, they become linked to a love triangle shaped by lies, passion, and jealousy.

The director of ‘Letter from an Unknown Woman’ constructs a vision of turn-of-the-century Paris, adorned with Belle Epoque trappings, an opulent mise-en-scene and his celebrated camerawork: gliding, twirling, capturing circular patterns as tragedy closes in on the artifice.

Critic Andrew Sarris has hailed it as “the most perfect film ever made”
