-- SIBELIUS Scene with Cranes
-- STRAUSS Four Last Songs
-- MAHLER Symphony No. 1

Tom Seligman - conductor
April Fredrick - soprano

To conduct great works by Finnish, German and Austrian composers, we’re delighted to welcome versatile and talented conductor Tom Seligman.

The centrepiece of the concert stars acclaimed American soprano April Fredrick in Richard Strauss’ sublime Four Last Songs.

Written at the end of a long and successful career, this, the composer’s swansong, is a work of breathtaking beauty and serenity.

The misty and mysterious Scene with Cranes, unusually scored for two clarinets, timpani and strings, was taken from the incidental music that the celebrated Finnish composer Jean Sibelius created for his brother-in-law Arvid Järnefelt’s play Kuolema (‘Death’).

Gustav Mahler’s magnificent Symphony No. 1, the ‘Titan’, has become one of the best-loved and most performed of all the German composer’s works.

It is youthful music of genius, alive with original musical ideas and great passion.

Mahler himself wrote: “My First Symphony will be something of which the world has never heard the like before.”
